About High River
High River grew around a ford on the Highwood River, which gave the town its name, and the Blackfoot called the place Ispitzee. The railway came in 1892, the village was formed in 1901 and the town in 1906. Roughly 68 kilometres south of Calgary at the meeting of Highways 2 and 23, it had 14,324 residents in 2021. The Highwood flooded the town badly in 2013. Ranch and farm country lies in every direction.
