About Okotoks
The Sheep River flows through Okotoks, about 38 kilometres south of downtown Calgary in Foothills County. Its name comes from a Blackfoot word for rock, likely meaning the Big Rock boulder nearby. Village status came in 1899 and town status in 1904, and the railway arrived in 1892. The 2021 census showed 30,405 residents, many commuting to Calgary. Subdivisions such as Cimarron, D’Arcy and Sandstone sit beside Drake Landing, an energy-efficient solar community begun in 2007.
