TV Won’t Turn On: Checks to Try Before Repair

A TV that will not power on is often a power or input issue rather than a failed set. Try these checks before booking a repair.

In-shop diagnostic $50 + GST (credited toward the repair if you proceed). In-home service call $95 + GST. Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Power checks

  • Confirm the outlet works by testing it with another device.
  • Unplug the TV for a minute, plug it back in and try the power button on the set itself, not only the remote.
  • Replace the remote batteries, or test the remote by pointing it at a phone camera to see whether the infrared light flashes.
  • If you use a power bar, plug the TV directly into the wall for a test.

Picture and sound checks

  • Check the input source and cables. Reseat HDMI and power cables at both ends.
  • If there is sound but no picture, shine a torch at the screen. A faint image can point to a backlight problem.
  • Try a different source device to rule out the cable box or console.

Signs the TV needs a technician

  • A red or blinking standby light with no picture.
  • Clicking sounds when you press power, or the TV turns on and then off again.
  • Lines, dark patches or cracks on the screen.
  • No response from the set at all after the power checks above.
