Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes: Causes and Fixes

When dishes come out dirty, the cause is often something simple like a clogged filter or the wrong detergent. Work through these checks first.

In-shop diagnostic $50 + GST (credited toward the repair if you proceed). In-home service call $95 + GST. Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Try these first

  • Clean the filter. Most filters can be rinsed out because they have a fine screen that catches debris.
  • Check the spray arms for blocked holes and make sure they spin freely.
  • Do not overload the racks or block the spray arms with large dishes.
  • Use the right detergent and rinse aid, and check your manual for amounts.
  • Run the hot tap at the sink until it is hot before starting the cycle, so the dishwasher fills with hot water.

Cloudy glasses and white spots

  • White film and spots are often caused by hard water, so a rinse aid and an occasional cleaning cycle can help. Check your manual for the cleaner it recommends.

Signs the problem needs a technician

  • The dishwasher does not fill, drain or start.
  • Water leaks onto the floor.
  • The cycle stops partway through, or the control panel shows an error code.
  • You hear grinding or other unusual noises.
