Fridge Not Cooling: What to Check Before You Call

A fridge that stops cooling needs attention. These checks take a few minutes and do not involve opening any panels or touching wiring.

In-shop diagnostic $50 + GST (credited toward the repair if you proceed). In-home service call $95 + GST. Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Start with the basics

  • Make sure the fridge is plugged in and the outlet works. Try a lamp in the same outlet.
  • Check that the breaker has not tripped. If it has, switch it off for 30 minutes and then back on.
  • Check the temperature setting. Controls are easy to bump when loading the fridge.
  • Make sure the doors seal fully. Items poking out of a drawer or shelf can hold a door open a crack.

Check airflow and coils

  • Leave space around the fridge so air can move behind and above it.
  • Do not block the vents inside the fridge and freezer with tall items. Cold air has to circulate.
  • Clean the condenser coils. Unplug the fridge first, then remove the kick plate at the bottom (or sometimes the rear) and vacuum the coils.

Signs the problem needs a technician

  • The fridge runs constantly but stays warm.
  • There is heavy frost or ice build-up in the freezer or at the back wall.
  • You hear clicking, buzzing or other unusual noises from the back.
  • Water is pooling inside or under the fridge.
  • The fridge has no power even though the outlet and breaker are fine.

Protect your food while you wait

  • Keep the doors closed as much as possible.
  • Move the most perishable items to a cooler with ice if the fridge will be out of service for several hours.
  • If food has been warm, follow Health Canada food safety guidance.
