Repair or Replace? How to Decide for Your Appliance
The right answer depends on the age of the appliance, the cost of the repair and what a comparable new one costs today. A diagnostic quote gives you the repair figure so you can decide with the facts.
In-shop diagnostic $50 + GST (credited toward the repair if you proceed). In-home service call $95 + GST. Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
A simple rule of thumb
- If the repair costs less than about half the price of a comparable new appliance, repairing is usually worth considering.
- If the appliance is near the end of its typical life, putting a lot of money into it may not make sense.
- Typical lifespans vary by type and brand. As a rough guide, many washers and dishwashers last around a decade, and fridges and ranges often last longer with good care.
Questions to ask
- How old is it, and has it needed repairs before?
- Is the fault a single worn part, such as a pump, element or valve, or a major component?
- Is it still under a manufacturer warranty? Check your paperwork before booking.
- Is a comparable new model affordable right now, including delivery and removal of the old one?
Why repairing can make sense
- A single failed part is often far cheaper than a new appliance.
- Repairing keeps a working machine out of the landfill.
- Every completed repair with Southland includes a complimentary 90-day warranty on parts and workmanship.
