Oven Not Heating: What It Could Be and What to Do
Ovens and ranges use high voltage or natural gas, so the safest approach is to do only the basic checks below and leave repairs to a professional.
In-shop diagnostic $50 + GST (credited toward the repair if you proceed). In-home service call $95 + GST. Mon to Fri 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Basic checks
- Check that the breaker has not tripped. Turn the breaker off, wait 30 minutes and turn it back on.
- Make sure the oven is set to bake or the mode you intended and that the clock or timer lock is not engaged.
- Check that the oven door closes fully and the door lock has released after a self-clean cycle.
- Write down the model and serial number before you call.
Common causes
- A failed bake or broil element in an electric oven.
- A faulty temperature sensor or thermostat.
- A damaged control panel, or a blown fuse after a self-clean cycle. During self-clean a range can reach about 500 °C (900 °F), which can stress fuses, wires and sensors.
- For gas ovens, an igniter that no longer gets hot enough to open the gas valve.
Safety
- If you smell gas, leave the home, avoid switches and flames, and call your gas provider or emergency services.
- Do not remove panels or touch wiring on an electric range. They carry 240 volts.
